Hello and welcome to my Top 5 Wednesday post!
T5W is a weekly meme is hosted by Sam @ThoughtsOnTomes. You can visit the Goodreads T5W group for more info.
This week’s theme is favorite character names. I don’t know about you all, but I am a huge fan of eccentric names… the more bizarre a name, the more I adore it. Bonus points if the character’s personality matches their name!
Let’s talk oddball names, shall we?
» Huckleberry Finn from The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain
Huckleberry! Not only the name of a weird fruit, but also the name of one of the greatest characters in literary history.
» Beezus Quimby from the Romona Quimby Series by Beverly Cleary
Who doesn’t love a name that rhymes with Jesus? Jesus Beezus!
» Ichabod Crane from The Legend of Sleepy Hollow by Washington Irving
Ichabod…this is just FUN to say! Especially when you say it with a “phlegm-y pronunciation.” Gross? Yes… Fun? You bet!
» Atticus Finch from To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee
Atticus sounds like a name from Greek Mythology does it not? Is there a Atticus in Greek Mythology? Can I get a fact check on that?
» Ebenezer Scrooge from A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens
If my name was Ebenezer, I would go by the nickname “Nezer”. This name is best pronounced in a “nasally voice.”
» Pippi Longstocking from Pippi Longstocking by Astrid Lindgren
Pippi! Such a fun & energetic name 🙂
» EVERY character from the Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling
Albus Dumbledore, Rubeus Hagrid, Hermoine Granger, Nymphadora Tonks, Dobby, Hedwig, Alastor “Mad-Eye” Moody, Minerva McGonagall, Luna Lovegood, Sirius Black, Neville Longbottom, Severus Snape… All hail J.K Rowling, the name master!
So many great and interesting names! Icabod Crane, how could I forget?! If I was named Ebenezer I would probably shorten it to either Eb or Ben. Here’s the research I did on the name Atticus:
Herodes Atticus (Greek: Ηρώδης ο Αττικός Iródis o Attikós; ad 101–177), or Atticus Herodes, was a distinguished and rich Greek aristocrat and sophist who served as a Roman senator. (from wikipedia)

Yay! You fact check for me ❤️ so this was a real person correct? Therefore NOT from Greek mythology?

It’s so funny how some names we hear so frequently that we forget how weird they are… I don’t think it ever occurred to me that “Huckleberry Finn” and “Atticus Finch” are definitely odd, but you’re right! And the others, too.
