Goodbye December and hello January!
Today I am wrapping up my reading & blogging month of December…
December was a very relaxing and low-key month for me. Once my children finished up with online schooling at the beginning of the month, the remainder of the month was smooth sailing. My children will be returning to in-person learning for the second semester, and I will be going back to a more normal work schedule. Online schooling while working evenings and weekends was just not sustainable for me. I am looking forward to having a more normal schedule and workload… Just kidding. I start grad school in January.
For those that do not know, I will be starting grad school in January for my MLIS. Since it has been 11 years since I was last in college, I’m a bit nervous about jumping back into the academic world after so long. Wish me luck!
» Mr. Dickens and His Carol by Samantha Silva
While I enjoyed the story concept and audiobook narration for this story, the plot and execution wasn’t there. Also, I just couldn’t get past when Charles’ family leaves him, it was out of sight, out of mind.

» Prince of the Elves (Amulet #5) by Kazu Kibuishi
I’d probably say this installment is the weakest of the series thus far, but still an amazing graphic novel series.
» King and the Dragonflies by Kacen Callender
Worth the hype! What a stunning MG novel about grief, friendship, and identity.

» Hollowpox: The Hunt for Morrigan Crow (Nevermoor #3) by Jessica Townsend
I just love this MG fantasy so much! I almost NEVER pre-order books, but I definitely pre-ordered this one. I really loved watching Morgan come more into her power in this book. Also, the fact that this installment centers around a mysterious illness was so 2020.

» Get A Life Chloe Brown (The Brown Sisters #1) by Talia Hibbert
This was a delightful surprise! Not only was the romance well done, I really enjoyed the representation of a chronically ill main character and an interracial relationship.
» Class Act (New Kid #2) by Jerry Craft
I enjoyed this one just as much as the first book. At first, I wasn’t sure about following a new main character, but Drew quickly won me over.
» Hood Feminism by Mikki Kendall
An excellent read about how mainstream feminism often ignores issues that plague women of color.
» The Camelot Betrayal (Camelot Rising #2) by Kiersten White
I have mixed feelings about this series. On one hand, I’ve really loved a few of White’s other books, but this one is not my favorite. I LOVE the concept for this story, BUT the plot is messy. White leaves this book on enough of a cliffhanger that I’d be open to reading the next installment.

» Things You Save in a Fire by Katherine Center
I loved that this book centered around a female firefighter! While I enjoyed the firefighter aspect, I feel like Center tried to cram too many “issues” into one story.
» Elatsoe by Darcie Little Badger
*3.5 Stars*
While this book had some amazing things going for it – amazing magic system, interesting murder mystery, a ghost dog! – BUT I just couldn’t fully connect to this story for some reason.

Good luck with starting school for your MLIS! I finished mine in 2018 and it was a great decision because I was able to make a big career move afterward.
