Did everyone have a good weekend? Did you read any good books?!
I had a fairly busy week full of hosting my book club (we read Homegoing & it was an excellent discussion), attending a concert (Rob Zombie! It was my first heavy metal concert & quite an experience), and even attended an 80s themed party (it was totally tubular). Despite my busy week in real life, I still managed to get some posts up on the blog & read 3 (almost 4) books this week! Yay me 🙂

Feelings in a few thoughts: bad-ass female lead; example of how to do the hate – love trope well; witty banter; good concept with fantasy elements; wanted more action out of a PIRATE book; solid read but could have been more
» The Sisters Brothers by Patrick deWitt
*3.5 Stars
Feelings in a few thoughts: outside my reading comfort zone; very much a western; play format? didn’t really understand the intermissions; dry humor – which I appreciated; journey where characters must face adversity along the way; enjoyed how everything panned out in the end – but wasn’t the dramatic ending I was anticipating; slower paced; struggled with my rating – possibly a 4 star book; won’t be for everyone
» Caraval by Stephanie Garber
Feelings in a few thoughts: went in with low expectations, but pleasantly surprised; gave me Wizard of Oz vibes; enjoyed the overall plot – darker than anticipating w/ good mystery elements; writing felt forced at times, like the author was trying a little too hard; too much sensory description – particularly smells; wanted a little more visual world building; wonder if I enjoyed this more because I haven’t read The Night Circus yet?

I’m glad you enjoyed Caraval, I am reading it at the moment, just started and I do have the feeling that the writing feels forced at times, which makes me a bit sad. But I’m very curious about how this will all turn out 🙂

Yeah I had trouble with Caraval because of the style (and also comparing it it Night Circus) I’m glad it pleasantly surprised you 🙂

I can definitely understand these criticisms. I think I definitely enjoyed it more because I went in with low expectations and had ZERO comparisons to what thought it would be. Now I need to read The Night Circus and see what I am really missing out on 🙂

Ahh that definitely makes sense- a lot of my problems with it was how hyped it was!! Yes!! Hopefully you’ll like it!!!

Looks like you’ve had a very productive week. I’ve not read Caraval yet and admittedly I am nervous to do so because I love The Night Circus. I’ll get to it one day haha. I hope you’re enjoying This Savage Song. Thank you so much for sharing my post. 😀

If I had read TNC first, I would be hesitant too. I feel like Caraval is a love it or hate it kind of book. I do think readers of TNC have been in the latter group, and have not enjoyed it as much. Hopefully it wont disappoint!

I have no idea how you managed to do all that *and* be a full-time kick-butt Mommy. I could learn a thing or two about prioritizing from you. 😀 I’m glad that you enjoyed Caraval. I’m waiting until the whole series is released before I read it, but it’s on myTBR. I’m also shocked that The Daughter of the Pirate King lacks action! How disappointing. I still want to check it out, though. Again– more series books! Give me a stand alone somewhere, please!
I am currently reading Dumplin via audio book and When the Djinn Falls in Love and Other Stories on my Kindle. On deck? Snow Crash by Neil Stephenson and Janesville: An American Story by Amy Goldstein. I am super excited for both of these books!

The Daughter of the Pirate King was much more about the characters and the romance, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but I just wanted more action. Not a bad book at all and I’m sure it’s just my personal reading tastes.
Girl! I know!!! There are WAY too many series out there. I prefer standalones so I only have to commit to one book vs. 17 lol
Excited to see what you think of Dumplin! and how it is via audiobook!
I haven’t heard of the books you have on your upcoming TBR! I’ll have to head over to Goodreads to investigate 🙂

The crazy thing about books is that everyone has different tastes, but that’s why I’ love book clubs so much. There is always so much to discuss!
I have recently been looking for more standalones. I love following characters over time, but lately I’ve wanted to be able to move on more quickly. With my tendency for binge reading series, I might get stuck reading only one author all year long! And that’s not acceptable.
The audiobook is GREAT so far. I really love Eileen Stewart. In fact, she might be one of my go-to narrators now… I’m not too far, but I’m loving it to this point.

*gasp* I really want to read Daughter of the Pirate King!! I’m so happy to see that you enjoyed it though! I haven’t actually read the blurb, literally just want to read it because COVER and PIRATE. #Shallow. I can’t believe how many books you got to despite being so busy?!?! Teach me your secret ways!

The Daughter of the Pirate King is a good book & definitely matches the beautiful cover. I would have liked a little more action, but overall a solid read. I can see why it’s so popular.
Haha if I am not mistaken, you have been pumping out blog posts AND videos? I’m sure you are also reading a bit as well. You get a lot done yourself 🙂

The Savage Song is in my line up as well. I am glad you enjoyed Caraval. I found a bit to appreciate but didn’t quite “love” it. I am hoping you enjoy Strange the Dreamer more than I did as well. It was not bad by any means, but slow for my tastes. I do think the sequel will be good though 😉

That’s pretty much how I felt about Caraval. It was a decent read, but it didn’t exactly knock my socks off either… It *could* have if a few things had been different.
I really enjoyed Strange the Dreamer! I definitely can see you wishing it had been a little more faster paced. My only issue with it was the insta-love….
