Book Tag: Mid-Year Book Freak Out Tag (2017 Edition)

MYBFOTag

Who tagged me in the Mid-Year Book Freak Out Tag you wonder?  Well no one, but I remember completing it last year, and figured I’d do it again this year.  #NoShame

Let’s get right to it, shall we?

Despite the fact that there were a few unanswered questions, I absolutely loved the conclusion of the Shades of Magic trilogy.  It is definitely one of my favorite series of all times.

» A Gathering of Shadows by V.E. Schwab

agatheringofshadows

If you asked me which book was my favorite in the Shades of Magic series, I’m pretty confident I would select A Gathering of Shadows… You know, if I was forced to choose.  I flew through this book the week before I was set to attend the A Conjuring of Light book tour.

Most Anticipated 2017 Release(s) for the Second Half of the Year

Sooooo I am totally out of the loop in regards to new releases since this year I’ve been focusing on clearing out my NetGalley eARCs & the books I already own, BUT I am going to pick two books that I will be attending the authors’ book tours in September…

» The Language of Thorns: Midnight Tales and Dangerous Magic by Leigh Bardugo

TheLanguageofThorns

» Little Fires Everywhere by Celeste Ng

Biggest Disappointment

Hmmmmm.  I don’t really have any disappointments necessarily, because all of the books I was looking forward to reading this year have turned out fairly decent… How about I share my least favorite book I’ve read thus far this year?

» The History Major by Michael Phillip Cash

TheHistoryMajor

Biggest Surprise(s)

» The Animators by Kayla Rae Whitaker

TheAnimators

I read this book in preparation for attending the SOKY Book Festival back in April.  I had not really heard anything about this book, but it became available through my library and decided to give it a go.  This book surprised me in the fact that it was so much more than I was ever expecting.  It was raw, gritty, & dark.  It absolutely blew me away.  Definitely one of my top reads of 2017 thus far!

» The Good Girl by Mary Kubica

TheGoodGirl

My favorite Mary Kubica book!  This book surprised me in the sense that I did NOT see that twist coming at the end.  Well played Kubica, well played.

» The Wolf Road by Beth Lewis

TheWolfRoad

This book surprised me in two ways: I am surprised at how much I enjoyed it despite it being way outside my comfort zone (and despite the gore), AND I was surprised by the twist…. which I probably SHOULD have seen coming but didn’t.

While there were plenty of things that made me cringe in this book, it is such a heartwarming and charming read.  If you need anymore motivation, you can read my post giving you reasons why you should read this classic → 5 Reasons Why You Should Read Anne of Green Gables + My AoGG Aesthetic #AnneReadAlong2017

Favorite Book to Film Adaptation

» Beauty and the Beast

Beauty&theBeast

Does Beauty and the Beast count?  I mean it is a fairytale…. Honestly I don’t really watch much TV or many movies, but the original Disney version of Beauty and the Beast (1991) was my favorite movie growing up (it came out when I was 4), so I was super excited they were redoing it.  I was so excited to see it, I braved taking a 3 year old to this 2.5 hour movie… We both loved it 🙂

    1. Now I just need to actually READ Norse Mythology ((hides head in shame)) It has been one of my most anticipated books this year but I haven’t found time to pick it up yet. The shame!

The Wolf Road is such a unique read! I cannot wait to see what the author comes out with next 🙂

  1. This post is so amazing I don’t even know where to start with my comment! I love all the books you mentioned, and I’m thrilled by the Schwabness of it all. I’m definitely going to read every single book in your “biggest surprises “category. Yes, you must read The Night Circus! It’s unlike anything else I’ve ever read. Oh, and look, you tagged me! Thanks!

    1. Well I do have you to thank for my Schwab obsession!!! Thank YOU for introducing me to one of my favorite series of all times 🙂

I hope you do pick up some of my big surprises! I would love to know what you think of them!!!

And yes, you need to complete this tag ASAP!!! I can’t wait to see which books you select!

  2. OHMYGOSH. YES TO EVERYTHING

But seriously. I adore the answers you’ve provided. Please read The Night Circus ASAP. It’s a beautiful novel and I think you’ll really appreciate it. Also, I’m a bit surprised you haven’t read your signed copy of Norse Mythology yet! But, it might be too pretty to read? Finally, I totally count Beauty and the Beast as appropriate for that category. It’s based off a fairy tale. #Winning

Hm. My favorite reads of 2017 have been Gemina, Rebecca, Hattie Big Sky and The Fifth Season. I’m like you in the sense that I haven’t been paying attention to new releases. I’ve got far too many books on my TBR to worry about! So, instead, I’ll just keep whittling through my TBR and NetGalley list. It’s taking time, but it’s worth it.

    1. Ahhhh I know! I think I’ve been putting off The Night Circus because EVERYONE recommends it to me and I’m scared I won’t love it…. The pressure!!!

And I feel such shame that I haven’t read Norse Mythology yet… It was my most anticipated book of 2017 AND I own a signed copy!!! What is wrong with me?!?!?!

The Fifth Season has been one I’ve had my eye on for a while… After reading this comment I went ahead and requested it from my library. Time to stop procrastinating!!!

  3. Lovely answers, Amanda! I’m so glad to see ACOL on your favorites for this year, it was indeed such a great finale to the series, I loved it so much 🙂
I haven’t read The Hate U Give and Strange The Dreamer yet, either, but I’m looking forward to them both, there is so much hype around both these books! 🙂

    1. Not going to lie, when I saw the cover I thought it was going to be a YA road trip story set in the 80s lol This is definitely NOT a YA book…. BUT there is a small road trip, so at least I was a little right.
