July 2017 TBR

July2017TBR

Hello bookworms!  To those of you who are fellow Americans, happy 4th of July!

For my July TBR, I’ve decided to take a break from ARCs & read a few books that have been getting lots of positive hype around the blogosphere.  Aside from one NetGalley book that was on my June TBR that I didn’t get to in June, I will not be reading any NetGalley ARCs this month.  For my sanity, I need a break.

Let’s see which books are on the agenda this month…

» Caraval  by Stephanie Garber

Caraval

Remember, it’s only a game…
Scarlett Dragna has never left the tiny island where she and her sister, Tella, live with their powerful, and cruel, father. Now Scarlett’s father has arranged a marriage for her, and Scarlett thinks her dreams of seeing Caraval—the faraway, once-a-year performance where the audience participates in the show—are over.
But this year, Scarlett’s long-dreamt-of invitation finally arrives. With the help of a mysterious sailor, Tella whisks Scarlett away to the show. Only, as soon as they arrive, Tella is kidnapped by Caraval’s mastermind organizer, Legend. It turns out that this season’s Caraval revolves around Tella, and whoever finds her first is the winner.
Scarlett has been told that everything that happens during Caraval is only an elaborate performance. Nevertheless she becomes enmeshed in a game of love, heartbreak, and magic. And whether Caraval is real or not, Scarlett must find Tella before the five nights of the game are over or a dangerous domino effect of consequences will be set off, and her beloved sister will disappear forever.
Welcome, welcome to Caraval…beware of getting swept too far away.

This one has some very mixed reviews, so I am interested in seeing which side of the fence I land on.

» Strange the Dreamer by Laini Taylor

strangeTheDreamer

The dream chooses the dreamer, not the other way around—and Lazlo Strange, war orphan and junior librarian, has always feared that his dream chose poorly. Since he was five years old he’s been obsessed with the mythic lost city of Weep, but it would take someone bolder than he to cross half the world in search of it. Then a stunning opportunity presents itself, in the person of a hero called the Godslayer and a band of legendary warriors, and he has to seize his chance or lose his dream forever.
What happened in Weep two hundred years ago to cut it off from the rest of the world? What exactly did the Godslayer slay that went by the name of god? And what is the mysterious problem he now seeks help in solving?
The answers await in Weep, but so do more mysteries—including the blue-skinned goddess who appears in Lazlo’s dreams. How did he dream her before he knew she existed? And if all the gods are dead, why does she seem so real?
Welcome to Weep.

I feel like this one of the most beloved books to be published in 2017.  I have yet to see a negative review for it.

» Flame in the Mist by Renee Ahdieh

FlameInTheMist

The only daughter of a prominent samurai, Mariko has always known she’d been raised for one purpose and one purpose only: to marry. Never mind her cunning, which rivals that of her twin brother, Kenshin, or her skills as an accomplished alchemist. Since Mariko was not born a boy, her fate was sealed the moment she drew her first breath.
So, at just seventeen years old, Mariko is sent to the imperial palace to meet her betrothed, a man she did not choose, for the very first time. But the journey is cut short when Mariko’s convoy is viciously attacked by the Black Clan, a dangerous group of bandits who’ve been hired to kill Mariko before she reaches the palace.
The lone survivor, Mariko narrowly escapes to the woods, where she plots her revenge. Dressed as a peasant boy, she sets out to infiltrate the Black Clan and hunt down those responsible for the target on her back. Once she’s within their ranks, though, Mariko finds for the first time she’s appreciated for her intellect and abilities. She even finds herself falling in love—a love that will force her to question everything she’s ever known about her family, her purpose, and her deepest desires.

I feel like this was one of those books that was on EVERYONE’S most anticipated books of 2017.  It seems to be getting fairly positive reviews too.

» Daughter of the Pirate King by Tricia Levenseller

DaughterofthePK

There will be plenty of time for me to beat him soundly once I’ve gotten what I came for.
Sent on a mission to retrieve an ancient hidden map—the key to a legendary treasure trove—seventeen-year-old pirate captain Alosa deliberately allows herself to be captured by her enemies, giving her the perfect opportunity to search their ship.
More than a match for the ruthless pirate crew, Alosa has only one thing standing between her and the map: her captor, the unexpectedly clever and unfairly attractive first mate, Riden. But not to worry, for Alosa has a few tricks up her sleeve, and no lone pirate can stop the Daughter of the Pirate King.

This one is going to be a buddy read with my best friend in real life.  We both have a thing for pirates, so I thought this one would be a perfect buddy read for us 🙂

NetGalley:

» Enchanted Islands by Allison Amend

EnchantedIslands

Inspired by the midcentury memoirs of Frances Conway, Enchanted Islands  is the dazzling story of an independent American woman whose path takes her far from her native Minnesota when she and her husband, an undercover intelligence officer, are sent to the Galápagos Islands at the brink of World War II.
Born in Duluth, Minnesota, in 1882 to immigrant parents, Frances Frankowski covets the life of her best friend, Rosalie Mendel, who has everything Fanny could wish for—money, parents who value education, and an effervescent and winning personality. When, at age fifteen, Rosalie decides they should run away to Chicago, Fanny jumps at the chance to escape her unexceptional life. But, within a year, Rosalie commits an unforgivable betrayal, inciting Frances to strike out on her own.
Decades later, the women reconnect in San Francisco and realize how widely their lives have diverged. While Rosalie is a housewife and mother, Frances works as a secretary for the Office of Naval Intelligence. There she is introduced to Ainslie Conway, an intelligence operator ten years her junior. When it’s arranged for Frances and Ainslie to marry and carry out a mission on the Galápagos Islands, the couple’s identities—already hidden from each other—are further buried under their new cover stories. No longer a lonely spinster, Frances is about to begin the most fascinating and intrigue-filled years of her life.
Amid active volcanoes, forbidding wildlife and flora, and unfriendly neighbors, Ainslie and Frances carve out a life for themselves. But the secrets they harbor from their enemies and from each other may be their undoing.
Drawing on the rich history of the early twentieth century and set against a large, colorful canvas, Enchanted Islands boldly examines the complexity of female friendship, the universal pursuit of a place to call home, and the reverberations of secrets we keep from others and from ourselves.

This is the NetGalley ARC that I didn’t get to in June, but will be reading this month instead.

  1. I just finished Daughter of the Pirate King last night and I am absolutely in love with it! It’s by far one of my favorite fantasies that I’ve read this year. I love hate-to-love tropes and this one by far succeeds with the storyline, on top of a bad ass heroine. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do!! I’ve read Caraval at the beginning of this year and it is one of my favorite favorite fantasies as well!!

I really want to get to Strange the Dreamer since Laini is one of my favorite authors, but I keep telling myself that I want to finish Dreams of Gods and Monsters before hand… I think that’s just me saying I’m scared as hell to read such a large book hahaha. Hope you have a great reading month!! It seems like you’re lined up for one. 😉

    1. I finished Daughter of the Pirate King and agree that the romance & bad ass leading lady were on point! I would have liked a little more action, BUT I definitely want to continue on with the series. I assume you are highly anticipating book #2? 🙂

I am about 60% through Caraval right now. I went in with pretty low expectations because I have seen such mixed reviews, but I have really been enjoying it so far! Fingers crossed the ending does not disappoint 🙂

I totally know what you mean. I am super intimidated by big books too. I have commitment issues lol

    1. I REALLY enjoyed Flame in the Mist! I wasn’t so sure when I started it, but it gets so much better as it goes on. I will definitely be continuing on with the series.

I read Daughter of the Pirate King and loved the romance & bad ass leading lady! I would have liked a little more action, but it is a solid read.

    1. So far so good! I’ve read Flame in the Mist, Daughter of the Pirate King,, & in the middle of Caraval as we speak! So far I am pleasantly surprised with Caraval…. I had low expectations going in since it has some pretty mixed reviews. Fingers crossed the ending does not disappoint!

  2. This is a great idea! I really need to get a break from my Netgalley reads but I have too many pending to do that right now… Hopefully in September though. xD I loved the Flame In The Mist and I’ve heard great things about the other three! I hope you will enjoy them and have a wonderful month.

      1. I’m trying to work through most of my NG ARCs so I can read my own titles again… It’s been too long! 😉 And I can’t wait to read the Flame In The Mist sequel! I had doubts before starting it, but I’ve really fallen in love with the worldbuilding and characters. Plus the writing style is great. 🙂

    1. I did compile quite the list didn’t I? So far I’ve read Flame in the Mist & Daughter of the Pirate King. Flame in the Mist was really good! Daughter of the Pirate King was good, but I would have liked a little more action… BUT it has a really good romance & a bad ass lead female character. I’m a little over halfway into Caraval and enjoying it much more than I was anticipating! Fingers crossed the ending doesn’t disappoint. I’m saving Strange the Dreamer for the end of the month to go out with a bang 🙂

      Happy reading in July!

  3. Ohh such a great TBR! I haven’t read Flame In The Mist yet, it was one of my most anticipated books but then I read tons of mixed reviews about it, so I am a bit nervous now…I’m eager to know how you feel about it! 🙂 Same goes for Caraval. Strange The Dreamer seems to be loved by EVERYONE out there, which is a bit scary…. I’ll be looking forward to your reviews 🙂

    1. I read Flame in the Mist, and enjoyed it. I really wouldn’t go into it expecting a Mulan retelling though… sure there are some similar elements, but it is definitely its own story. I really enjoyed the strong female main character, the romance, and the political intrigue, but I did find a few things confusing…. I will definitely be continuing on with the series though. I am a little over halfway through Caraval right now. I went in with pretty low expectation because I’ve read such mixed reviews, but I am surprised how much I’m enjoying it so far. Fingers crossed the ending does not disappoint. I have NOT read The Night Circus, so maybe that’s why I am enjoying it so much? I know a lot of people were comparing it to TNC… I am saving Strange the Dreamer for the end of the month. I am hoping to end July with a bang 🙂

      1. I’m so glad you are liking Caraval so far – I recently bought it and I’m eager to read it 🙂
Well I certainly hope Strange The Dreamer will live up to all your expectations 😀

  4. This is an awesome TBR, Amanda! I love the idea of “shirking” duty to ARCs for a month– I realy should just spend a month doing nothing BUT reading ARCs! I got overwhelmed a few months ago when I went on a requesting spree and I’m more-or-less avoiding NetGalley to try and cope.

All of your books, sans Enchanted Islands, are on my own TBR. A Flame in the Mist is the only one I’ve got right now. I hope to read it soon! This is a really inspiring and positively reviewed list of books! I hope that you enjoy them all.

    1. Thanks Jackie! I probably should NOT be taking a NetGalley break, but I did it anyways lol I finished Flame in the Mist the other week and enjoyed it! It has a strong female lead, feminist thoughts, a good romance, and political intrigue, BUT there were some confusing aspects in regards to the fantasy elements & character connections… Not perfect, but I will be continuing on with this series.

Daughter of the Pirate King was a tad disappointing. I loved the bad ass leading lady & the witty banter between her and her love interest, BUT I was expecting a lot more action in a pirate book… not bad by any means, but I wanted more from it.

I’m reading Caraval right now and surprised how much I’m enjoying it! I have NOT read The Night Circus though, and I know a lot of people were comparing the two books, so I am not sure if this is the reason or not.

I’m saving Strange the Dreamer for the end of the month because it is so beloved. I want end July with a bang 🙂

      1. Oh that’s good. I think it didn’t work for me mostly because I kept comparing it to the Night Circus. I wish they hadn’t said it’s similar to the Night Circus in the promo.

    1. I am saving Strange the Dreamer for the end of the month. I really have only seen rave reviews for it, so I want to end July with a bang 🙂 I am about 60% through Caraval. I went in with super low expectations because of all the mixed reviews, but I am actually enjoying it thus far. I have NOT read The Night Circus though and I know a lot of people were disappointed in comparison… so I’m not sure if that has anything to do with it. Lots of things could go wrong in the next 40% lol I’ll keep you posted!

      1. From reviews I’ve noticed that people who hadn’t read The Night Circus enjoyed it more then people who had so it’s probably better you hadn’t that way you couldn’t make the comparisons I did + I let the hype get to me. I didn’t like the MC from the get go so I’m sure you’ll stay liking them till the end 🙂
I can’t wait to see what you think of Strange ❤ Of course I hope you love it!
