Book Event: Lisa Jewell’s “I Found You” Book Tour

IFoundYouBookTour

Earlier this year I read Lisa Jewell’s The Girls in the Garden and really enjoyed it!  So when I found out that Lisa Jewell would be coming to a city near me on June 3rd for her U.S. book tour for I Found You, I quickly made plans to attend…

This event was held at the Joseph-Beth Booksellers book store in Cincinnati OH.  If you live in (or near) Ohio, I highly recommend the Joseph-Beth bookstores as they hold some amazing author events!  In addition to the Cincinnati location, there are 2 stores in Kentucky and 3 locations in various hospitals throughout Ohio.

As I have done in the past with my other book/author event posts, I am going to share a few things I learned from Lisa Jewell during this event in bullet form…

» Lisa started writing in 1996 after she was laid off from her secretary job.   Interestingly enough, a journalist friend had asked her what she wanted to do with her life, and she mentioned she had always wanted to write a book.  This friend made her a deal that she would treat her to dinner at her favorite restaurant if Lisa would write 3 chapters of a book.  Lisa accepted this challenge & got to work and wrote the first chapters.  After reading those first 3 chapters, her journalist friend encouraged Lisa to send them off to a few agents.  Lisa sent them off to 10 agents and received 9 rejections.  One agent thought Lisa had some potential and picked her up.  After Lisa finished the book, her agent got her her first publishing deal through Penguin.

» She gets her book ideas while walking.

» Lisa is not a planner.  She comes up with an idea/concept, then just starts writing.  She gives a book up until the 50% mark to decide whether to keep going with the book, or dump it.

» It generally takes Lisa 3 months to write a book.

» Things went so smoothly while writing I Found You, that she hardly had to do any rewrites.

» Lisa writes 1,000 words per day.  Some days this only takes her an hour, others it takes 3+ hours.

» She has to get out of the house to write, and generally visits a café.

» Lisa’s favorite books that she has written are The House We Grew Up In and The Truth About Melody Browne.

» The House We Grew Up In seems to be quite popular in the U.S, but rarely gets mentioned in the U.K.

» One of her favorite authors is Maggie O’Farrell.

» Feels her book The Third Wife was her “transition book.”  She wasn’t satisfied with how it turned out.IFoundYou2

» I Found You came about after she abandoned a book that was going to be about two people who connect in a suicide forum online that decide to meet up in real life.  After She abandoned this book idea, she couldn’t let go of one of the characters, this character becomes Alice in I Found You.

» Her next book, Then She Was Gone, comes out in the UK in July 2017, but won’t be out in the U.S. until April 2018.  It’s about a woman whose teen daughter disappears one day on her way to the library.  10 years later the mother meets a man with a 9 year-old daughter who is eerily similar to the daughter that went missing 10 years ago…

  1. That’s so awesome you were able to go! I loved I Found You so that’s definitely my favorite so far. (Although I’ve only read The Girls besides that one.) Looks like you had a great time! 😀

      1. Oh I didn’t know that! Definitely sounds like a fascinating story; I’ll have to get a copy some time soon.

  2. I love reading your event posts. They make me so happy! These bulleted lists are brilliant, and I am totally stealing that idea if I ever write my own. 😉
I am BLOWN AWAY that Jewells writes ~ one book every 3 months. Wowza! I can barely write enough words to fill my blog, let alone come up with a book. She must have some amazing talent!
I haven’t read any of her books yet, but I am not particularly interested in thrillers. I do like contemporary lit, though… should I try it? If so, which book would you recommend I start with?

    1. Thank you! I’ve found it is too hard to try and compile all the information from a Q&A session into a coherent paragraph, so I take the easy way out lol

I don’t typically read thrillers either, mostly because I feel they are ridiculously farfetched, BUT I like Jewell’s books because they seem very realistic…. Sure there may be a few details that are a tad unlikely, but the majority of her plots I could totally see happening in real life. I’ve heard “The House We Grew Up In” was really good… it is about a woman hoarder… BUT I haven’t read it yet. I’ve read “The Girls in the Garden” and this one, which are both more thriller…

  3. Book events yay! Love your event posts and you look awesome in ur pic (I swear I always make a strange stunned face with authors XD). I haven’t read anything by her but I’m going to add this to my TBR I’m always looking for more Thriller authors to binge.

    1. Very interested in seeing your take on it, as well as the other members in your book club! I definitely think there are some good discussion points…. especially teenagers and their questionable though processes haha

  4. I ve found this super interesting to read , especially Lisa’s habits. The three chapter thing is what my boyfriend should do when I tell him that I want to write 😛 And writing up to 50%? :O

  5. Very cool event! Thanks for sharing! We don’t seem to have too many in the area where I live (Knoxville area) – but if I wanted to travel a few hours, Nashville is THE literary place to be. Ann Patchett’s bookstore Parnassus attracts so many literary events. And there’s the Southern Festival of Books. So far I haven’t made one work with my schedule. But I keep meaning to!

    1. That is such a shame! I live a good 5 hours away from Nashville, but I would totally drive that for a good book festival! I drove a little over 4 hours away to attend one in southern Kentucky in April 🙂 I didn’t realize Ann Patchett had a book store! I bet it draws some amazing authors…. maybe I need to move to TN lol

  6. I love that she doesn’t plan and just gives it until the 50% mark to determine whether to keep going. I have never beennable to plan when writing. Even in college when my courses required we submit outlines, rough drafts, I would cheat 😉 I would write the entire paper and then go back and throw together an outline and notes because I just don’t function that way haha. Great post!

    1. I find it fascinating hearing about how authors approach writing! What works for one definitely doesn’t work for all. I’ve never been a writer, but if I was, I would probably be a planner because I plan out most aspects of my life lol

      1. Oooooh, okay. I’m a jealous weirdo. Plus, I was on my own little writing retreat in a cabin, being crawled on by various and sundry bugs, and trying to write. Please forgive me! 😀
