Weekly Wrap-Up: 5/22 – 6/4/17

Happy Sunday bookworms!

I know this post is going up SUPER late (it is almost no longer Sunday lol) but things have been a little crazy today.  This coming week I will be going out of town on TWO separate occasions, so I may be a little scarce over the next week or so.   Try not to miss me too much 🙂

Somehow I didn’t get a weekly wrap-up post up last Sunday, so this wrap-up will be covering the past 2 weeks.

*Weekly Wrap-Up is a weekly post where I feature what posts were published on the blog for the past week, any bookish/blog happenings, what I recently finished reading, what I am currently reading, what I will be reading next, noteworthy posts around the bookish blogosphere, and any interesting bookish articles I came across.

Recently finished reading:

» Anne of Avonlea by L.M. Montgomery

AnneofAvonlea

5-Star Rating System

Summary of feelings:  Since I loved Anne of Green Gables so much, I decided to go ahead and read the second book, Anne of Avonlea.  As I mentioned, I am taking part in the Anne of Green Gables Read Along (#AnneReadAlong2017), which the ultimate goal of is to read the entire series in the remaining months of 2017.  I am not sure I am going to be able to achieve this, but I’m going to give it a go I think.  Anne of Avonlea gave us a whole new cast of lovable characters, BUT if I am being honest I didn’t love it as much as the first book.  I’m not sure if it is due to the fact that Anne is growing up, or if no other book in the series will ever live up to the first… I still really enjoyed the second book.

» The Double Blind by Chris Bohjalian

TheDoubleBlind

5-Star Rating System

*3.5 stars*

Summary of feelings:  This one was so hard to rate because I really liked the concept, but felt that the execution was a little messy at times and the ending was far too abrupt.  It made for a wonderful book club discussion because it tackled topics like mental illness & homelessness.

» The History Major by Michael Phillip Cash

TheHistoryMajor

5-Star Rating System

Summary of feelings:  I contemplated DNFing this book so many times which is crazy because there are only 130ish pages… I may have muttered the words “What the hell is going on here?” a few times while reading The History Major.  This book felt like an acid trip… and not a fun one.  Could it be possible that I just didn’t “get it”?  Maybe.  I don’t think that is the case though.

Full review to come.

» Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher

ThirteenReasons

I finished this one last night and I haven’t sorted out my feelings about it just yet.  On one hand, I do think the author had a great concept here with a very important theme: words & actions can sometimes have big effects on others.  HOWEVER I am struggling with some of the authors choices regarding this book.  I also wasn’t a huge fan of the ending.  It felt rushed and I didn’t feel any type of closure BUT this may have been what the author intended… I wasn’t planning on writing a review for this one, but I have an idea for a non-traditional review, so stay tuned.

    1. You live in Canada right? I think I read somewhere that AoGG is your most famous book… They aren’t required reading in school? 😜 I finished the second one and it wasn’t as good as the first, but still a lovely read. Honestly I don’t think you could beat the first book ❤️

      1. The first one is, but we never read the rest, so maybe that’s why. I loved the first book so much I also think there’s a hidden fear that the rest might ruin that for me. Who knows maybe I’ll pick them up sometime !! I’m glad you enjoyed the second, I don’t think anything could beat the first book either. ❤❤

  1. I am loving the Anne features. Happy to see Avonlea did not disappoint of course 🙂 You will certainly be missed during what sounds like a busy week ahead. Take care and make time to rest! Thank you for the very kind mention of my post ❤ So appreciated!

  2. Thanks for sharing my link, lovely! Looking forward to reading Cait’s post for Instagrammers too! I see in your Goodreads widget that you’re reading Commonwealth. How are you finding it so far? I read it a little while back, and oh man, that first chapter has got to be one of my favourite openings. I think of it every time I look at my orange tree!

    1. I completely agree with the opening of Commonwealth! I enjoyed it, but I also struggled with it at times too. I loved the blended family portrayal and the existential questions it raised, but I think I had issues with the time line. At some points, I think the time hopping worked really well, but at other times I was a bit confused. I still think State of Wonder is my favorite Ann Patchett book.

      1. I haven’t read State of Wonder. Commonwealth was my first Patchett, but it left me keen to read more. Though I totally get where you’re coming from with the confusing timeline.
