This week’s theme is…

April 5th: Top SFF Books on Your TBR *Booktube SFF Awards Babble Crossover Topic!*
–Talk about the science fiction and fantasy books you want to read ASAP!

If you remember, a few weeks ago (all the way back to March 8th) the theme for T5W was “Favorite Science Fiction & Fantasy Books.”  Unfortunately, my list for this topic only included fantasy books as science fiction is not a genre I frequent.  If you are curious, you can read my post here →Top 5 Wednesday: Favorite Fantasy Books.  Anyways!  I vowed in that post to make reading more science fiction a priority this year.

Here are my top science fiction books that I would like to read this year…

» The Martian by Andy Weir

TheMartian

 Published: February 11, 2014

A mission to Mars.

A freak accident.

One man’s struggle to survive.

Six days ago, astronaut Mark Watney became one of the first people to walk on Mars.

Now, he’s sure he’ll be the first person to die there.

After a dust storm nearly kills him and forces his crew to evacuate the planet while thinking him dead, Mark finds himself stranded on Mars’ surface, completely alone, with no way to signal Earth that he’s alive. And even if he could get word out, his supplies would be gone years before a rescue could arrive.

Chances are, though, Mark won’t have time to starve to death. The damaged machinery, unforgiving environment or plain-old “human error” are much more likely to kill him first.

But Mark’s not ready to quit. Armed with nothing but his ingenuity and his engineering skills—and a gallows sense of humor that proves to be his greatest source of strength–he embarks on a dogged quest to stay alive, using his botany expertise to grow food and even hatching a mad plan to contact NASA back on Earth.

As he overcomes one seemingly insurmountable obstacle after the next, Mark begins to let himself believe he might make it off the planet alive.

But Mars has plenty of surprises in store for him yet.

I’m totally game for a book that has the opening line of: “I’m pretty much f***ed”

Life can turn on a dime—or stumble into the extraordinary, as it does for Jake Epping, a high school English teacher in Lisbon Falls, Maine. While grading essays by his GED students, Jake reads a gruesome, enthralling piece penned by janitor Harry Dunning: fifty years ago, Harry somehow survived his father’s sledgehammer slaughter of his entire family. Jake is blown away…but an even more bizarre secret comes to light when Jake’s friend Al, owner of the local diner, enlists Jake to take over the mission that has become his obsession—to prevent the Kennedy assassination. How? By stepping through a portal in the diner’s storeroom, and into the era of Ike and Elvis, of big American cars, sock hops, and cigarette smoke… Finding himself in warmhearted Jodie, Texas, Jake begins a new life. But all turns in the road lead to a troubled loner named Lee Harvey Oswald. The course of history is about to be rewritten…and become heart-stoppingly suspenseful.

» Dark Matter by Blake Crouch

darkmatter

Published: July 26, 2016

“Are you happy with your life?”

Those are the last words Jason Dessen hears before the masked abductor knocks him unconscious.

Before he awakens to find himself strapped to a gurney, surrounded by strangers in hazmat suits.

Before a man Jason’s never met smiles down at him and says, “Welcome back, my friend.”

In this world he’s woken up to, Jason’s life is not the one he knows. His wife is not his wife. His son was never born. And Jason is not an ordinary college physics professor, but a celebrated genius who has achieved something remarkable. Something impossible.

Is it this world or the other that’s the dream? And even if the home he remembers is real, how can Jason possibly make it back to the family he loves? The answers lie in a journey more wondrous and horrifying than anything he could’ve imagined—one that will force him to confront the darkest parts of himself even as he battles a terrifying, seemingly unbeatable foe.

From the author of the bestselling Wayward Pines trilogy, Dark Matter is a brilliantly plotted tale that is at once sweeping and intimate, mind-bendingly strange and profoundly human—a relentlessly surprising science-fiction thriller about choices, paths not taken, and how far we’ll go to claim the lives we dream of.

This pretty much sounds like it is going to mess with my mind… sure, why not!

» The Road by Cormac McCarthy

TheRoad

Published: September 26, 2006

A searing, post apocalyptic novel destined to become Cormac McCarthy’s masterpiece.

A father and his son walk alone through burned America. Nothing moves in the ravaged landscape save the ash on the wind. It is cold enough to crack stones, and when the snow falls it is gray. The sky is dark. Their destination is the coast, although they don’t know what, if anything, awaits them there. They have nothing; just a pistol to defend themselves against the lawless bands that stalk the road, the clothes they are wearing, a cart of scavenged food—and each other.

I really have no idea what to expect from this book.  Are there zombies in this book?  The synopsis is giving off The Walking Dead vibes…

I guess this is a movie as well.  Has anyone read the book & seen the movie?  Thoughts?

» Illuminae (The Illuminae Files #1) by Amie Kafman & Jay Kristoff

Published: October 20, 2015

This morning, Kady thought breaking up with Ezra was the hardest thing she’d have to do. This afternoon, her planet was invaded.

The year is 2575, and two rival megacorporations are at war over a planet that’s little more than an ice-covered speck at the edge of the universe. Too bad nobody thought to warn the people living on it. With enemy fire raining down on them, Kady and Ezra—who are barely even talking to each other—are forced to fight their way onto an evacuating fleet, with an enemy warship in hot pursuit.

But their problems are just getting started. A deadly plague has broken out and is mutating, with terrifying results; the fleet’s AI, which should be protecting them, may actually be their enemy; and nobody in charge will say what’s really going on. As Kady hacks into a tangled web of data to find the truth, it’s clear only one person can help her bring it all to light: the ex-boyfriend she swore she’d never speak to again.

BRIEFING NOTE: Told through a fascinating dossier of hacked documents—including emails, schematics, military files, IMs, medical reports, interviews, and more—Illuminae is the first book in a heart-stopping, high-octane trilogy about lives interrupted, the price of truth, and the courage of everyday heroes.

I own a copy of this book and have already flipped through it.  I think this is one of the most uniquely formatted books I’ve ever seen.  Not sure if the format will be distracting while actually reading the book, but it is definitely fun to look at.

Do you read science fiction?  If so, which sci-fi books are your favorite?

Do you have any sci-fi books on your TBR?

Have you read any of these books?  What did you think?

  1. I used to not read much science-fiction, especially fantasy, but once I found diverse SF whoa! 🙂 But we all have favorite and not so favorite genres. Have you tried different stuff under the speculative fiction umbrella? Maybe there’s something that appeals to you.
I read The Road in uni ages ago, I remember it was slow and depressing, but well-written with regard to mood.

  2. I’ve read three of the five on your list. All of them were great five star reviews and I highly recommended them all. If I was to put them in some type of order The Road would be in third place, very depressing. Second The Martian, very sciencey (not a real word) but easy to understand. I felt very smart after reading it. And first place would go to 11/22/63, this one was awesome. It has everything. I hope you enjoy them.

  3. I’m totally game for a book that has the opening line of: “I’m pretty much f***ed” BAHA! same here, The Martian has been sitting in my iBooks since last year & when I attempted to watch the movie 1st…both Gretchen @Chicnerdreads & Drew @TheTattooedBookGeek publicly shamed me LMAO! I’d like to get to it soon as well. I can almost guarantee when you finish Illuminae, you will say “well why didn’t I read that sooner” looks are deceiving with that one. Dark Matter is on my actual physical shelves & it def seems like it will mess with your head lol. Great T5W Amanda 🙂

  4. I absolutely love ‘The Road’. I picked it up at a used bookstore and came home and read it in one sitting. It still stays with me so strongly. Cannot recommend enough! The rest of these are on my TBR so I am happy to see you chose them 😛

  5. I’ve read and enjoyed three of these and also fancy picking up the two remaining books – King and Crouch). The Martian is very entertaining, The Road is very dark but compelling, Illuminae is very good too – I need to read No.2 soon.

  6. You basically just mentioned four titles I loved reading, even though I’m not really into sci-fi either! Dark Matter and The Martian even belong to my all time favorites… I just love LOVE those two. ❤ Both The Road and Illuminae are great too, although the second is mostly interesting because of its unique formatting; the plot itself is pretty basic.
I hope you will enjoy these!

  7. I usually avoid sci-fi too because I’m sure I haven’t been reading the right books, haha! The ‘science’ part of the genre almost always seems to forced and farfetched to me that I accepted it’s not something I’d normally pick up. (Unless there’s a fluffly gay couple on the book. Then, I’m reading sci-fi and loving sci-fi. I’m ashamed of me.)

  8. I’m not a big sci-fi reader, but sometimes I wander into the genre because I am very curious – that’s what happened with Illuminae, and I did not regret this. What a crazy ride. I hope you’ll enjoy it when you read it, Amanda! 😀

    1. I’ve heard it is sooooo good! I’ve just been putting it off because it’s like a million pages and I have commitment issues lol I know it is a quicker read because the format and probably isn’t as long as it looks, but I’m also nervous about the format…

      1. I get it – I was sooooooooooo nervous about the format as well. It took me a little while to get into the story, but once I did, I was impressed at how into it I actually felt, and how I could feel FOR the characters despite not being inside of their heads, really. I hope you’ll feel the same way 🙂

  9. I loved Illuminae! I can’t wait to see what you think of it when you get around to reading it! I still haven’t read the sequel, Gemina, but plan to soon! I also hope to read The Martian and Dark Matter soon (especially Dark Matter, since it just sounds freakin’ amazing and everyone loves it!) Great top 5!
