March 14: Top Ten Books On My Spring TBR

Part of my Spring TBR is going to be my TBR for the SOKY Book Fest, which is taking place on April 22.  When preparing for a book festival, I attempt to read as many books by confirmed authors as possible before the event.  The remaining books are just going to be ones I hope to get to before the summer.

» Commonwealth by Ann Patchett

I was thrilled when I discovered that Ann Patchett was going to be one of the featured authors at the SOKY Book Fest.  I had never read a Patchett novel before, but Commonwealth had been on my radar.  So far I’ve read Bel Canto and State of Wonder by her.  Bel Canto was just ok for me, I actually enjoyed State of Wonder more.   I have high hopes for Commonwealth.

I am not sure if I am going to get to my last Ann Patchett book on my SOKY Book Fest TBR or not.  This one is actually the lowest rated book off my Patchett TBR, so it will probably be the last book I read before the event and only if I have time.

This is a middle grade WWII historical fiction.  I hope that the inside will match the stunning cover.

»The Illusionist’s Apprentice by Kristy Cambron

I was excited to see that Kristy Cambron was on the confirmed author list for the SOKY book fest.  I had read The Butterfly and the Violin last year, and thought it was a beautiful story.  I went on and read A Sparrow in Terezin this year.  The Illusionist’s Apprentice is Kristy’s new release this month.

This book is actually on my March TBR, so I am hoping to get to this one next.  This series seems to be fairly popular, so I decided I’ll give the first book a go and see what its all about.

» East by Edith Pattou

This is an older book, first published back in 2005, but I think this book was fairly successful back then.  When I saw Edith Pattou on the author line up, this was her only book that I recognized.  It was available at my library, so here we are.

» The Animators by Kayla Rae Whitaker

I *think* this is a coming of age story about two friends who become award winning animators?  This is the author’s debut novel, so we shall see how it goes.  Again this was available at my library, so I’ll give it a go.

» The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas

Another one of my most anticipated books for 2017.  After talking to my friend Lilly @Lair of Books (after reading her amazing review of the book which you can read here → Review: The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas) I knew I had to make this book a priority this spring.

» The Bear and the Nightingale by Katherine Arden

I know this is more of a wintry read, but I live in Ohio and it is currently snowing (yes, it is March 14th) so I think I am safe.

» Human Acts by Han Kang

I actually won a copy of Human Acts from a twitter giveaway hosted by the publisher.  I had been trying to get my hands on an ARC copy, but I wasn’t successful.  I was thrilled to win a copy.

» The Mothers by Brit Bennett

I actually attended an author event for this book back in February, but I have YET to read the book.  I really want to get to this one before summer.

    1. I think the reason I keep pushing it back on my SOKY TBR is the fact that it is a ridiculously big book and series… I am intimidated for sure. I’ve heard very good things about it though, so I really want to get to it before I attend the event in April.

      I am so excited about The Hate U Give. I know it is going to be life changing.

    1. Heads up about Cambron novels, she usually has a lot of religious undertones in her books… Her faith is very important to her, so it shows in her writing. In her past books, it hasn’t been pushy, but it is a common theme in her books.

      I *think* we have talked religion before and I thought you told me you were atheist, but I could have you mixed up with someone….

  9. Wow! You have an impressive and busy Spring ahead of you. There are so many great books on this list– sadly, I have not read any of them. I have Norse Mythology, The Hate U Give, and The Bear and the Nightingale on my TBR as well!

    I’m really impressed at how many Pratchett books you are reading! Do you own them all? Are you hoping to get them signed?

    1. Patchett is such a beloved author (and the featured author at the event) so I really wanted to read as many of her books as I could. I own Commonwealth and The Magician’s Assistant, but the other two books I’ve read by here I borrowed from the library. Sadly, at this particular festival you have to buy all books that get signed there (and at full retail price) so I really try and read to figure out which books I want to spend my money on….

      1. Yikes! I didn’t know that was something which happened at book events. That’s a bit… rude? Possibly not the right word, but I’m upset. Sigh.

        I haven’t read any Patchett books, but I’m glad she is one of your beloved authors! It’s important we all have one (or eight!). I’m glad you get to see her in person. Good luck picking the right book to buy and get signed!

  10. Paper Wishes looks interesting the cover looks great. I haven’t read ww2 historical fiction for middle grade before so I think I need to put this on my tbr too! I’m so jealous of everyone who gets to read The Hate U Give this month it doesn’t come out till April here in the UK 🙂

    1. I read Paper Wishes in one sitting. It was a great HF book for a younger MG audience. The writing is fairly basic, so I think the target audience is probably 7-10 age range? I handed it to my son to read, so we shall see if he actually does. It is about a Japanese-American family who was sent to live in a internment camps during World War II. I like that the book covers something in U.S. history that isn’t talked about much here in the U.S. for obvious reasons. They don’t talk about it in school because we wouldn’t want to make ourselves look bad ((eye roll))

    1. I finished Paper Wishes yesterday in one sitting! It is definitely a good MG historical fiction for a younger MG audience. Probably 7-10? The writing is very simplistic, which is why I think the target audience is probably on the lower side. I really like that it is about a part of U.S. history that we don’t hear about much: when the U.S. government: the relocation of Japanese-Americans into internment camps during World War II.

  14. I want to read The Bear and the Nightingale and The Hate U Give too! I’m actually hoping to start the latter sometime in the next two weeks – reviews have been absolutely glowing so far and I’m excited to tuck into the story and get into the meat of it.

    And you’re so right – that cover for Paper Wishes is so melancholic yet beautiful. I’ll have to check it out. ❤

    1. Can’t wait to see what you think of The Hate U Give… I know it is going to be a life changer when I pick it up.

      I actually read Paper Wishes yesterday in one sitting. It is a short MG historical fiction that has more simplistic writing, so I would say the target audience is probably 7-10? It was a good book. It covers something in U.S. history that is rarely talked about: the relocation of Japanese-Americans into internment camps during World War II.

  17. Great TBR! I have The Bear And The Nightingale and The Hate U Give high on my list as well.. And I have been wanting to try one of China Williams Chima books for YEARS. I hope you will enjoy these! Book festivals are a great excuse to read more books. 😀

      1. Haha definitely! 😉 Her books are definitely intimidating… And there are different series to choose from as well; I actually feel kind of lost as where to start. Also, a big yes to the commitment issues; I’m terrible at actually finishing series.

    1. Thank you! From what I hear, The Hate U Give deserves all the hype and is a game changer.

      I HIGHLY recommend Gaiman. I read him for the first time last year and he quickly climbed to the top of my favorite author list. I have been working my way through all of his books 😊

  20. The Hate U Give is one of my most highly anticipated books of 2017, but I wasn’t able to pick it up for the book store last week. 😥 I do hope to read it sometime in the near future though, it sounds absolutely amazing!

    Neil Gaiman’s Norse Mythology seems to be on EVERYBODY’S TBR list. I will have to check that out …

    In any case, I wish you good luck with your spring reading! 🙂
