Bookish Babble: Setting Goals for 2017

BBGoals.jpg

Do you set goals for yourself at the start of each year?

I find that setting goals at the beginning of every year helps to keep me motivated throughout the year.  I am so big into making goals, that I not only make yearly (“long term goals”), but also monthly (“short term”) goals.  That’s right, I love goals!

goal-setting

In this post I am going to give some helpful hints for setting your bookish goals for 2017, and also share my own goals for 2017.

Here are a few tips when setting your goals (bookish or otherwise) this year…

» Make your goals achievable

impossible

I know everyone likes to “reach for the stars,” but you also need to be realistic with your bookish goals.  Look at the previous year(s) and see what you accomplished, then adjust from there.  For example, if you read 20 books in 2016, setting your goal to read 100 books in 2017 is probably a little ambitious.  A more realistic goal would be 30ish.  If you are a inactive blogger and your goal is to become more active, set your goal to post 2-3 times a week, not every day.  Don’t set yourself up to fail.

» Write your goals down

Write them down.jpg

When I say write them down, I mean write them down some place you will be able to see them often.  Seeing your goals often will help keep you motivated and inspired to keep working towards achieving them. Post them to your fridge, hang them on a bulletin board, keep them in your office, etc. etc.  I like to write my goals for the year in my planner.

» Create a plan

planning

My favorite way to do this is to give myself monthly goals in order to reach my yearly goals.  For example, if you want to read 60 books in 2017, you should set a monthly goal to read 5 books every month.  You can even go one step further and plan out exactly which books you will be reading each month.  For a blogging example, say I set a goal to post 5 book reviews every month.  I would write a check list out every month of each book review I want to write.

» Track your progress

progress-tracking

Tracking your goals is an important way to keep yourself motivated and on task.  For reading goals, the Goodreads challenge is a fantastic way to track progress.  Goodreads even tells you if you are ahead or behind your goal.  For blogging, I use a planner to keep track of everything.  I keep track of when I post, what I post, what I will be posting, etc. etc.  Also, check lists are my best friends!  I have also seen other bloggers who like to use excel or google sheets to track their blogging data.

» Share your goals

tell-a-friend

Tell people your goals!  Join the Goodreads challenge, post them on social media, write a blog post on them, tell random people walking down the street… whatever you have to do to spread the word, which will help keep you accountable.  Studies show that people who tell their friends/family their goals are much more likely to achieve them.

Speaking of sharing your goals…

My Bookish Goals for 2017:

» Read 90 books

This one is pretty self explanatory.  I read 82 books in 2016, so I definitely think this goal is achievable.

» 80% feedback ratio on NetGalley

If you have been following my blog for a while, you may have read about my dilemma with NetGalley.  When I first discovered NetGalley back in March 2016, I did not know what I was doing.  Long story short: I requested an insane amount of books not thinking I’d get approved and ended up being approved for 75 books.  Lesson learned.  My NetGalley books are my #1 priority in 2017.  Currently I’ve read 17 of these books.  Only 58 to go!

» Read & review more children’s books

I am a bookworm and a mother, so children’s literature is very important to me.  For 2017, I am planning on expanding my Kids’ Corner feature and making it a bigger part of my blog.  I want to start reviewing picture books and more middle grade books.  I know that this isn’t going to appeal to all of my followers, as many of you are not yet parents, but I hope to reach a new following of parents who are looking for books to read to their young children or books to borrow/buy for their middle grade readers.  This isn’t to say that I am not going to be reading and reviewing adult and YA books, just that I will be adding to the mix.

» Continue to read more diversely

This is not just a goal for 2017, but a goal moving forward.  This is also going to play a factor in my goal to read & review more children’s books.  Diversity in children’s literature is just as (if not more) important than it is in young adult and adult books.  If anyone knows of any book reviewers (bloggers, booktubers, bookstagramers) who focus on diversity in children’s literature, please let me know!

» Plan & draft posts ahead of time

This one is huge.  Since I started blogging I’ve been a “post as I go” blogger.  I really need to work on getting ahead of the game.  As you can see, this post probably should have been posted BEFORE the new year, but it is going up now.  Obviously I am not doing too well with this goal.   I really need to work on planning my blogging weeks and months out in advance.  I think this will help with my blogging stresses.

» Make a dent in my physical TBR

After my NetGalley books, the books I already own are my second priority.  I’d like to knock out at least 20 of these books this year.  Seriously guys, it has gotten out of control.  I have two floor to ceiling bookcases and one of them is completely filled with unread books.  I’m going to say there is probably 200+ books in this bookcase…. My name is Amanda, and I hoard books.

» More active on Instagram (@Cover2CoverMom)

I absolutely love taking pictures of books for my blog posts, but for some reason I am horrible at remembering to post them to Instagram… I mean I have tons of pictures that I could upload, I am not sure why I don’t?  I think it stems from the fact that the pictures I take are first and foremost for the blog, whereas people who are big into Instagram take the pictures FOR Instagram… Did that logic make any type of sense to anyone?  No?  I don’t blame you.  Also, now that I take my pictures with my camera and edit them on my computer, it is a real pain in the butt to email them to myself so I can post them from my phone… In other words: I’m lazy.

» Participate in a reading challenge

I am definitely going to be participating in Naz’s (@Read Diverse Books) reading & reviewing challenge.  If you haven’t heard about it, you can read more about it here → Read Diverse 2017 – A Reading And Book Review Challenge For Bloggers!

Also I am going to participate in the Diversity Bingo 2017 challenge.  If you haven’t heard about it, Aimal @Bookshelves & Paperbacks is co-hosting.  You can read more about it here → Diversity Bingo Announcement & TBR.  Don’t forget to use the hashtag #DiversityBingo2017 on twitter if you participate in the challenge.

diversitybingo

I really like that these challenges are ongoing throughout the entire year AND I can knock out two goals (read more diversely and participate in a reading challenge) at once!  Is that cheating?

booktopboarderWhat are your bookish goals for 2017?

  1. Great (goal -groan) post! One of mine is definitely the 80% on NetGalley. I did exactly the same you, requesting and not expecting to get approved. I also want to read more on my tbr as well.

  2. Love every inch of this post. I so agree with you on writing goals down on paper. I do that on my planner as well. With me, I’m a huge bullet style type of person so I love to make my goals like a checklist.

I think realistic goals are great to achieve without the added pressure or stress. I hope you achieve all your goals and I look forward to your future post =)

    1. Thanks Gretchen! I do the same bullet style lists every month! I write down which books I want to read, reviews I need to write, what blog posts I want to draft & post, etc. etc. I love checking things off my to-do lists!

May you reach all your goals for 2017 as well my friend 🙂

  3. Such a great post Amanda – I am so stealing some of these techniques! I am also a “post-as-I-go” kind of girl so keeping my blog a fun and active place is very high on my goals list for 2017 and beyond. I also plan to read 85 books this year (last year was 50) but I wish you the best of luck in the new year 🙂

  4. Great post Amanda! I’m also working on cleaning up/reading through my TBR as my books are overflowing on my bookcases right now! Yikes! I’m also working on trying to read more, and slowly spend less time on social media which is actually going well so far. I’ve finished more books in these first two weeks of 2017 than I did in the last months of 2016. Definitely going to continue to read more diversely, and work on my Instagram even more. Good luck in your bookish goals for 2017! 🙂

  5. This is a fantastic post (do I say that to you too often haha). But it truly is. Not only do I really respect your goals and share a few, I love your advice. Staying on track and keeping our goals in sight can be challenging. And sometimes I can start with good intentions and then find myself derailed due to lack of organization.. etc. So I am going to try to be good and follow some of these tips 😉 ❤

  6. It’s so fun to read about other blogger’s goals. I didn’t really set any other than the Goodreads challenge, which is to read 90 books in 2017 (twinsies). I figured you had read way more than 82 books! Hah, I don’t know why I got that impression. Maybe it’s because you published book reviews so frequently? Anyway, I think I ended the year with 92ish books, but of course not all of them were full-length novels, but I don’t think about that. I’m sure I can hit 90 again this year.
Thanks for joining #ReadDiverse2017. It’s very low-pressure, but definitely aim for those badges!

I’m doing DiversityBingo2017 as well, but I’m just reading books I already have on my TBR and seeing what bingo squares they fulfil. So far, all 4 books I’ve read this year fit into a category. haha. That’s a great start to the challenge!
Good luck with all these goals, Amanda.:)

  7. As always awesome post hun! I love goals too but I always try and make them achievable and challenging, I have a notebook specifically for goals/challenges/to-do lists so all my goals have gone in there 🙂 I think I’ll be taking part in diversity bingo this year too 🙂

  8. Such a great post, and I love your tips for keeping track of goals, I really should write mine down as well, I think it’d help me focus and motivate me for sure 🙂
Best of luck for all of your goals this year, I’m sure you’ll make it! I want to read more diversely as well this year, and I’m reaching for 60 books -if I remember correctly. Last year I set my goal to 50 books and ended up reading 69, but well…I didn’t want to aim too high this year 🙂

  9. Wow! You have set some extremely ambitious goals for yourself this year, Amanda! I wish you all the best with them. Your Goal Setting tips are common sense to me, but I realize that isn’t how it works for everyone– I’m glad you shared! How will you be tracking your goals?

  10. Some excellent tips here! I always try to make my goals realistic and love the satisfaction of achieving/keeping up with them. I also need to work on my Netgalley books and my physical TBR. I’m going to join the #BeattheBacklist challenge and aim to read at least 40 books I already own this year (which should be fairly easy to do given how many I hoard!). I’m also going to take part in the Diversity Bingo, it’s such a great idea.

  11. “Only 58 to go!” 😂😂😂 Ahaha oh good luck with those! Your NetGalley quest is epic 👍
Those are great goals though and always wonderful to see people making sure they read more diversely. I think Naz got that covered for 80% of book bloggers 😁
I think there’s diversekidlit Blog and Debbie Reese is doing amazing work for Native American rep with a focus in kidlit I think.
    Happy reading this year!🎉📚

  13. These are some pretty great goals Amanda, YOU CAN DO IT!!! lol. I really thought 75 was more of a guesstimate LMBO! but I guess not, I didn’t even know that they would go ahead and approve that many smh. I’d want them to cut me off like the bill collectors do when people owe them $$ BAHAHA! I’ve got my Netgalley down to 9 books left & Edelweiss down to 6. I also have a small stack of 7 physical arcs. Le sigh…we are on the same path because I too have 2 whole bookshelves worth of unread books & want to make a dent as soon as I get through my arcs. I think it’s wonderful that you will be reading diverse childrens books, i’ll be on the lookout for any reccs since I’m always buying diverse books for my 2 tiny humans. One book that Izzy (my 5yr old dtr) recently read & loved (so did I hehe) is Ada Twist, Scientist. Izzy has personally requested more books by this author making my heart smile. Also, very happy to see you also participating in Naz’s reading challenge since your reviews are gold in my book 😉

    1. OMG I totally need to be put on NetGalley probation lol Like they should revoke me request button… I actually picked up Ada Twist, Scientist from the library to review! I will definitely be featuring it next month 🙂 I’ve found some really awesome diverse children’s books that I’m really excited to share them!

      1. Haha! I’m currently benched from NetGalley, they always stop approvals once I slip under 60% by the way I see it…if they spread out the approvals some then maybe I wouldn’t slip so fast 😂😂😂 I’m actually going to be picking up the rest of the books by this author since Izzy my 5 yr old is a fan now. Can’t wait to see your recommendations 😃💕

  14. Love this post! Some really useful tips on setting and sticking to goals. I’m setting very similar goals to you – including being more active on Insta (which I am TERRIBLE) at and maintaining a decent rating on NetGalley. Good luck with all of your goals for 2017! I’m sure you’ll smash them. 👊🎉
