Wrap Ups & Hauls

Weekly Wrap-Up: 12/19 – 12/26/16

wwu12-26

Hello my bookish friends!

I hope everyone who celebrates had a wonderful Christmas, and to those who do not celebrate, I hope you had a wonderful weekend.  My family and I had a wonderful Christmas full of family time, gifts, food, and fun.  I could not ask for more.  I cannot wait to share with you all my amazing Christmas book haul.  My husband really spoiled me.

As per usual, I have grossly underestimated my free time around the holidays, which is why I’ve been MIA for the past week or so.  Even this wrap-up is going up a day late.  Oops.  I hope you will all be patient with me while I play a little catch up.

*Weekly Wrap-Up is a weekly post where I feature what posts were published on the blog for the past week, any bookish/blog happenings, noteworthy posts around the bookish blogosphere, what I recently finished reading, what I am currently reading, and what I will be reading next.

Recently finished reading:

» And I Darken by Kiersten White

5-Star Rating System

I am pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed this book.  If you don’t mind slower paced historical fiction, give this book a go.

» George by Alex Gino

5-Star Rating System

I absolutely adored this book.  What a beautiful story that can be utilized to help children better understand transgendered issues.  I would recommend this book to older middle graders (10+) and I would also recommend reading this book WITH your child.  This book is an opportunity to open up dialogue between you and your child.  I will explain more in my upcoming review.

» Alice in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll

5-Star Rating System

I am sad to report that this was more like 2.5 stars that I rounded up to 3.  I am not sure what the issue was here.  I listened to the audiobook version, which I thought was wonderfully narrated, but I had a hard time with this book.  Had I not seen the Disney adaptation, I don’t think I would have been able to imagine this story in my mind… I am not sure if I just missed it or not, but it seemed like the world building was lacking.  I was anticipating vivid descriptions of Wonderland, but I didn’t feel like I got that.

Currently reading:

» Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo

I am only a few pages into Six of Crows.  This is most likely going to be my last read of 2016, so I hope it won’t disappoint.

» 13 Ways of Looking at a Fat Girl by Mona Awad

13ways

I am 50% through this one so far.  I have to admit, when I decided to download the audiobook version, I thought this was non-fiction, but it is actually fiction.  I was indifferent through the majority of the first half of the book, but as Lizzie’s story goes on I am finding it very relatable.  I’m sure my review for this one will end up being very personal.

Up next:

» A Gathering of Shadows by V.E. Schwab

  1. I’m glad to hear you and your family had a wonderful Christmas! I’m also glad to hear that you liked George. I liked it too, though I wish the title of the book had been Melissa or Girl George (as the author had originally wanted).

  2. I’m glad you had a wonderful Christmas! And some pretty wonderful books as well; I loved George, Six Of Crows and A Gathering Of Shadows! It’s good to hear you enjoyed And I Darken; I have been wanting to read that one for months.

  3. Happy holidays! I survived the 5-hour family Christmas meal, so it was a success, haha! I haven’t read Six of Crows yet, I decided to keep it for 2017 but it has been hard to stay away from the reviews. I’ve never read Alice in Wonderland but with all the retellings around, I think I should try it 🙂

    1. Thank you! I hope you have a wonderful holiday weekend as well!

I am super bummed about Alice in Wonderland. Honestly I’m wondering if I just wasn’t playing enough attention while I was listening to the audiobook… it all seemed very abrupt to me. I will definitely give it another go but in print form.

      1. I am not sure about audio. I always read it, so possibly? It is not a very long read so it might be worth attempting. Of course, maybe it jist isn’t for you. I really enjoy Through the Looking Glass. Was that included in your audio?

  4. Yay! I’m so glad you enjoyed George!! Alice has always been a challenge for me. I’ve read it a few times, and I honestly still don’t really get it.
It’s okay to take time off for family- thy are far more important than we are. 😉 My holiday was lovely, and still continuing, as I celebrate Hanukkah.

    1. Ahhhh Happy Hanukkah!!! I must admit, I don’t know much about it other than it is a 12 night celebration correct?

I’m glad to hear that I’m not alone with the Alice in Wonderland struggle. It all felt super abrupt and not a lot of explaining was going on. I did love the Disney adaptation though.

I’m crossing my fingers that the comment works!!!

      1. Where did I get 12? Obviously my knowledge of Judaism is lacking lol

How are you liking the Paperwhite?! I’m loving mine! Of course before this I had the original Kindle, so it is a big upgrade haha

  5. YES! I am so happy to see you enjoyed And I Darken since I had put off reading it after reading so many mixed reviews. You’ve given me hope Amanda, thank you! lol George has been on my TBR for a while now, I know i’m going to love this book and can’t wait to read it. Curious to read your thoughts on Six Of Crows & 13 Ways Of Looking At A Fat Girl. I’ve been saving AGOS for February since my memory is the worse & i’d like to remember everything before reading A Conjuring Of Light. Happy to read you had an amazing holiday & that the hubby spoiled you <3! Happy New Year Amanda!

    1. I really enjoyed Six of Crows. I have to admit, it took me a while to get into it. Not sure if I was forcing it or because of the hype. Once they reached the prison though I was immersed! I had one annoyance with the book, but overall an awesome book! Now 13 Ways… not so much. It was actually pretty bad lol there was a short time where I thought the book was going to redeem itself but it quickly went downhill 😕
