Happy Sunday bookworms!
I am bound and determined to get this post up BEFORE Sunday evening for once… Typically it goes up so late on Sunday evening, so late that often it is almost Monday by the time I actually get it posted. Sundays are typically filled with one of my son’s sporting events. Now that football is over, wrestling is in full swing. Not sure if anyone is familiar with how wrestling meets work, but basically you sit around for 5 hours to watch your kid wrestle 3 matches for a total of 10 minutes tops. As you can imagine, this eats up a lot of my time on a Sunday. This weekend we had a break in the schedule, resulting in a rare Sunday at home. I cherish these days! I know my fellow parents can probably relate 🙂

» Here Comes the Sun by Nicole Dennis-Benn
*4.5 Stars
This book was so good! There is so much going on in this one: racial issues, socio-economic issues, LGBT issues etc. etc. This was also my first time reading a book where there was a f/f romantic relationship with a main character! This book would make an excellent book club selection. Take note all my book club participants 🙂
» The Book Club Murders by Leslie Nagel
I read this one for my book club’s November/December book selection. Cozy mystery is probably one of my least favorite genres, so I am not going to give this one a star rating. This one just wasn’t my cup of tea.
Currently reading:
» Small Great Things by Jodi Picoult
I didn’t make much headway in this one this week unfortunately. I have really enjoyed what I have read so far. I really like how Picoult chose to include the perspective of Turk, a man who follows the ideology of white supremacy. It isn’t easy to read his hateful thoughts and beliefs, and I know it is only going to get worse, but I think it is an important aspect to show. Why? because we can learn from it. What drives these people? The answer is hate and fear.
» The One-in-a-Million Boy by Monica Wood
I am really enjoying this book! The old woman in this book isn’t really a curmudgeon, but this one is giving me a similar feel to A Man Called Ove, which I really liked.
On deck:
» And I Darken by Kiersten White
This one is STILL up next. I hope to finish Small Great Things early in the week, so I can hopefully knock this one out this week too.
How was your week?
What are you currently reading?
What will you read next?
Happy reading
Looking forward to your thoughts on An I Darken.

I’m very curious about it, especially with all the mixed reviews…

Cozzy mysteries… I like them sometimes. When they’re not too fluffy. If they’re funny and the mystery is great, then yes (like Stephanie Plum).

Yes!! I read a few of those books a LONG time ago but I didn’t enjoy those!!
This was was too unrealistic and corney for me 😕

Hmm cozy mysteries aren’t really my thing either but kudos to you Amanda for being a good sport 😉 my copy of Small Great Things is finally on it’s way from the U.K. & I’m super excited. I think I’ll be taking a mini break from my ARCS just so that I can read it when it arrives. Bookdepository promised Xmas delivery so I’m holding them to it! 😂 I also ordered Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi 🙌🏼 I’ve seen Here Comes The Sun on a few trusted blogs & know this is one I need to p/u as well. Can’t wait to read your thoughts on And I Darken. Bought it because I’m loving Historical Fiction in YA lately & haven’t read anything in Vlad The Impaler which this is loosely based on. Though there are some mixed reviews, it hasn’t completely lost my interest *fingers crossed* seems like you had a great week Amanda 💕

I’m so nervous about And I Darken! I’ve seen awesome reviews and awful ones lol HOWEVER lots of the bad ones were put off because they were expecting a fantasy read it seems? I’m not sure. I’ll keep you posted lol

I really hope you like And I Darken! I really, really loved it but I realise that tons of people are disappointed by it bc they were expecting it to be all action and it was instead very slow-paced and character-focused. ❤

Yes! I’ve seen lots of disappointed reviews… many of them were expecting fantasy elements though rather than historical fictions from what I’ve seen. I am a big time historical fiction fan, so slower paced books don’t bother me 😊

It’s sounding like you’d at least be entertained! Yeah, there’s no magic at all – I think because it’s categorised as “fantasy” everyone assumed it does, but it’s just purely historical.

Ah mate, you don’t even need kids to fall behind with blogging XD I’m still psyching myself up to write my next Past to Paper so that I don’t suddenly remember on the last day of the month and go AHHH QUICK WRITTEE!
I really need to get into more Jodi Piccoult books – I’ve only read Between the Lines (because adult books are way too close to me actually being an adult) but the entire internet seems to have swooned over Small Great Things. Hopefully you get to And I Darken soon!

Oh goodness, 5 hours taken up by your sons’s sports events! That’s real commitment, Amanda. You’re an awesome mom. haha. Have you considered sneaking in an Audiobook while you’re there? Ah, but it’d probably be too noisy to get anything out of the reading experience.
Sooo glad you liked Here Comes The Sun. I’ve had it for months now, but just cannot find the time to read it with all my other books.
The Jodi Picoult book sounds really interesting. Look forward to your full thoughts on it.

I would normally occupy the wait time with some type of reading but unfortunately parents are required to work the meets. I also happen to be one of the few parents who knows how to record the scoring on paper (I was a wrestling stat in high school) so I often get that job. BUT the few meets where I don’t have to volunteer I definitely bring a book 👍🏻
Here Comes The Sun was amazing! I had a slight issue with the ending feeling a little abrupt, but other than that, this book was perfect to me ❤️ I think you would really enjoy it.
