Weekly Wrap-Up: 10/17 – 10/23/16

You know how in last week’s wrap-up post I said I would be back with a vengeance this week?  Yeah, not so much.  October is the busiest month for my family.  This week was both my kid’s birthdays, so we had a big Halloween themed birthday party for them on Friday evening.  Saturday we had my son’s last football game of the regular season, now they move into the playoffs as the first seed.  Then Saturday evening we had two different parties to attend.  Today is my daughter’s 3rd birthday, so we are surprising her by taking her to Disney on Ice this evening.  Not that any of this would interest anyone, but I am just trying to make excuses justify my lack of blogging for the past two weeks.  I just need to accept the fact that for the month of October, the blog has to be put on the back burner.  Easier said than done.

Way to break my heart Patrick Ness… or should I blame Siobhan Dowd?   I had a pit in my stomach the entire time I was reading A Monster Calls.  What a wonderful book about grief and loss.

I struggled with this book in the beginning, HOWEVER once things started to pick up, I was hooked.  I CANNOT believe this book was written in the 1950s… This book is timeless, and the themes are still very relevant today.

 First timer here!  I wish I would have read this when I was younger.  I loved the 2005 movie adaptation, and must say I am impressed how true the movie is to the book, at least thus far.  I am a little over 50% through.

I will be starting The Underground Railroad this evening.  I have been looking forward to this one ever since I was approved for an ARC via NetGalley.

On deck:

I’m not sure if I will be able to squeeze another book in before November or not.  I haven’t decided my November TBR yet, but I do know I will be reading only NetGalley ARCs in the month of November.

  1. I’ve had a really busy month too. Unexpectedly. I bet the Halloween themed birthday bash was so much fun!! I finished Six of Crows on Monday and that’s it this week. I’m almost done with The Shadow Queen by CJ Redwine, and starting How to Hang a Witch today. I’m hoping life slows down so I can read more!! The Underground Railroad sounds really good and I’d like to read it someday! I hope you like it.

    1. We do the Halloween themed birthday every year, the kids really love it. I find that a Halloween themed party is a good middle ground, otherwise it would be hard to throw a cohesive party for a 10 year old boy and a 3 year old girl lol Minecraft/Disney princess fusion maybe?
      Yay for reading Six of Crows!!! Did you love it? I am planning to read it in December if I cannot get to is sooner. I’ve also heard wonderful things about The Shadow Queen, so I’ll look forward to your reviews.

      1. Six of Crows started off really slow for me. Like, the first whole half of the book pretty much. It was mainly backstories and it was hard for me to get into. But after that, it was amazing! Literally incredible. I just wish it hadn’t been so hard for me to get into at first.

      3. I read Shadow and Bone. But Shadow and Bone has nothing to do with Six of Crows so you can read it without having to read Shadow and Bone. They’re Grisha, same as in Shadow and Bone… but all the backstory in Six of Crows is for the characters in Six of Crows. If that makes sense. I hope it does! 😊

  3. Have you done/are you planning on a full review of A Monster Calls?
    Hope you’re back properly this time and not just telling us all your back to provide numerous excuses next week, I’ve got my eye on you and I’m watching like a hawk to see when Six of Crows makes an appearance on one of these wrap ups!

    1. Hahaha oh Kirsty! How I love you. Thanks for keeping me accountable. I promise this week is going to be better. It’s just this whole parenting thing is kicking my ass lately lol I PROMISE you Six of Crows will be read in 2016, if not then I will write an entire post about how awesome you are and how much I suck:)

  4. Aww Amanda!! Happy Birthday to all your kids! Congrats to your son making it to play offs! I think us bloggers all have that month where we have to leave the Blogging for last (September is that month for me). We are still here though =)
    I cannot wait to read A Monster Calls. I need to order it already and read before the movie comes out. That trailer is way too good.

    Tomorrow I’m seeing A Monster Calls 🙂 I read Farenheit a while ago and I struggled a bit too. It was interesting, but not my kind of book in the end. Cna’t wait for your Underground Railway review ^^

    1. Hahaha Thanks Annie! The whole parent thing has been kicking my ass lately. The sad thing is that my kids have a more active social life than I do lol

  8. I’m so glad you like Farenheit 451! I can’t wait until I get a chance to read that, myself.
    I haven’t read A Monster Calls, because I read The Knife of Never Letting Go and I really struggled to connect to anything– I’ve been told a lot of Ness’s books are similar, so I’ve held off. Perhaps some day…

    1. Farenheit 451 is definitely a classic for a reason!

      I haven’t read any other of Patrick Ness’s books, but I didn’t have a issue connecting with Conor, the MC in A Monster Calls. AMC is a story about grief, but it is told in such a unique way. Almost folklore-like. I can’t say that it was a 5-star read, but I definitely enjoyed it. It is a super quick read (200-some pages) and the illustrated version is gorgeous.
