Hello and welcome to my Top 5 Wednesday post!
T5W is a weekly meme is hosted by Sam @ThoughtsOnTomes. You can visit the Goodreads T5W group for more info.
This week’s theme is…
September 7: Characters You’d Want as Family
– You can say this in a broad way or be specific (i.e. _______ would be a cool aunt, ______would be a great older brother, etc.)
There are so many great characters to choose for this week’s theme, therefore I thought I would narrow it down and only select characters from books that I’ve read thus far in 2016…
» Maura, Calla, and Persephone, The Raven Cycle by Maggie Stiefvater
I adored the women of 300 Fox Way, particularly Maura, Calla, and Persephone. You know those family members that are loud, over the top, and often the most drunk at family events? The ones that keep you laughing and entertained all night? Maura, Calla, and Persephone are THOSE types. I would love this trio to be my crazy Aunts.
» Fannie, Queenie, and Dollbaby, Dollbaby by Laura Lane McNeal
Another amazing set of women characters. I would love Fannie & Queenie as Grandmothers, and Dollbaby as a cousin. I think Fannie would take the more “fun Grandmother” role, while Queenie would be more of a teacher/mentor type of Grandmother. Dollbaby would be a fun older cousin to get into all kinds of trouble with.
» Fermín, The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafón
I adored Fermín’s character. He is highly amusing and wildly inappropriate at times… I would love to have Fermín as an Uncle. Since I now have so many Aunt’s to chose from, I am going to pair Fermín with Calla from The Raven Cycle. Fermín, the optimist, with Calla, the pessimist, would make for a well balanced couple. Plus they are both ridiculously hilarious, so I would totally have them over for dinner all the time.
» Ove, A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman
This is actually my current read, and even though I am only 50% through, I’ve already decided I would have Ove as my Grandfather. I would thoroughly enjoy teasing him and trying to get him to smile. I am going to pair methodical Ove with eccentric Fannie from Dollbaby as a set of Grandparents. Now THAT would be an interesting couple 🙂
» The March Family, Little Women by Louisa May Alcott
I mean is there a more perfect family in all of literature? Father & Marmee March are the epitome of perfect parents. Not only are they loving, but they are very supportive of their daughters. I would like to be the 5th March daughter… Meg, Joe, Amy, Beth, & Amanda… I think I would fit right in. I don’t have any sisters in real life, but I think a house full of sisters would be amazing. It would be like having a house full of best friends! Jo and I would obviously be the closest.
Great post! I wish I could have pretty much everyone from The Raven Cycle as family. Here’s my post:

So I tried to comment on your T5W post, but for some reason it wouldn’t let me? I kept trying to input my WordPress UN but an error message would pop up 😦 Good call with Gansey being the “golden child” cousin… lots of teasing to go around I assume

I think Calla was the only character I really loved in The Raven Boys 🙂

Lovely choices – who would I pick, mmm, it’s tougher than you think. Will have to ponder it a little!

FERMIN! Oh wow, he is such a great pick for an uncle! I think my brain was a little roasted when I did my top 5 as I’ve now seen so many other’s lists like yours and thought ‘oh dammit, why didn’t I pick them!!’ Hahaha :).

Great post! I’m semi-committed (I’m not the most structured woman I know) to trying T5W when my blog redesign is complete. One character that came to my mind is Britt-Marie from Fredrik Backman’s “Britt-Marie Was Here”. He creates the most awesomely quirky characters!

The nice thing about T5W is that you don’t have to participate every week. I only participate with the themes I like… Or if I don’t like it, I’ll do a past one I’ve not done before! I do the same with Top Ten Tuesday. This is my first Fredrik Backman book! Did you read A Man Called Ove? I can’t remember if you said you have or not… If so which book was better?!

I like that you narrowed it down and thank you for not choosing the Weasleys!
The only book for you list that I’ve read is Little Women and totally agree about wanting to be in their family. I have 3 sisters and two brothers and always got along better with my sisters, so a family full of sisters sounds pretty awesome to me. I would be the only male sibling, which would be a slightly different dynamic (maybe?) than all females, but still awesome. :]

Hahaha I figured the Weasleys would be making an appearance in most T5W posts. I try to NOT select answers that I know the majority will choose.
That’s awesome that you are from a big family! My husband is 1 of 6 kids as well! I have 3 brothers, so I grew up the exact opposite from the March girls… maybe that’s why having sisters appeals so much to me.

I am going to take that as a compliment lol I try not to select the characters/books that I think the majority will choose. For example, I knew the Weasleys and other characters from Harry Potter were going to make an appearance in most T5Ws. Not that I don’t want any HP characters as family (of course I do lol)

Haha yes! Who wouldn’t want the Weasleys in their family? 🙂 but yeah it was intended as a compliment, it’s always nice to find some variation compared to the majority of lists 🙂

I usually don’t do these top 5s…But this is an interesting one. I’d have a lot to think about. Definitely Sabriel from the Garth Nix Abhorsen trilogy. Oh and Arya as a little sis. And Lizzy Bennet as an older sister…

Elizabeth Bennet as an older sister for the win!! I could have done my entire T5W post with classic characters… Jane Eyre would be another brilliant older sister!

I feel like the more I thought, the more people I’d pick. Not sure if I could do just five. Omg Uncle Bilbo! Lol I’m hobbit sized too

Lol! Ok also Grandpa Gandalf. Man. Grandpa Bennet wouldn’t be bad either. I’m sure I could think of a whole hoard of cousins from fantasy novels too. To protect me from bullies and teach me to swordfight and ride horses!

Ugh not sure if my reply posted. But it’d be hard to just pick 5. Uncle Bilbo! I’m hobbit sized too

I haven’t read those other books, but I’m going to take your word for it because I would love to have eccentric, fun-loving, mysterious Maura, Calla, and Persephone in my family!
