    1. It is an amazing series! HOWEVER they are super long and very complex. I read the series back in ’09 however I have not read the most recent book (8th) that came out in 2014 bc it’s been too long and I can’t remember all the details lol This is a series best read back to back. You won’t regret it though!

      1. I actually have Cry the Beloved Country sitting on my shelf as we speak! I picked it up during a thrift store excursion. Can’t beat $0.99 🙂 Thank you for the recommendations!

  1. Shadow of the Wind is extremely excellent! Some of my faves aren’t set in real places since they tend to be fantasy, but the settings and stories are reflective of different cultures. Soundless by Richelle Mead is drawn from China and Taiwan, and The Star-Touched Queen by Roshani Chokshi is centered around Indian mythology.

    1. For some reason WordPress thinks you are a spammer! Ugh! I adore books from different cultures! I haven’t read Soundless or The Star Touched Queen but I would love to learn more about Chinese and Indian culture!!!

      1. I don’t know how rooted in the modern cultural identities they are, but Star-Touched especially includes a lot of the mythological creatures. Soundless describes Chinese art a lot; the protagonist is a painter and is very descriptive in terms of sight since the premise is that her entire village is deaf. Even things as simple as seeing characters wear cultural clothing and eat regional food is a breath of fresh air after so many pseudo-European fantasies.
