Happy Thursday! It’s time again for Book Traveling Thursday! Visit the BTT Goodreads Group for more info and to see upcoming themes.
This week’s BTT theme was…
June 23rd – Summer just started!! Choose a book you want to read this Summer.
There are so many books on my summer TBR… However there is one book in particular that I am making my mission to read THIS summer. Actually, I may read it next to ensure it gets read.
Here is my #1 book on my summer TBR list…
Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell
I must make a confession… I have never read a Rainbow Rowell book. Gasp! I have actually been meaning to pick one up for a while now, but never got around to it before now. I decided to start with Fangirl for a few reasons. One, I want to see what all the fuss is about. Two, I am looking for a “lighter read” after reading so many “heavy reads.” Lastly, and most importantly, I am reading this book to get a better understanding of one of my best friends. I have a friend who is the epitome of a “fangirl.” For as long as I have known her, over 10 years, she has always had her many fandoms. Her main fandoms (at least I think) are Harry Potter, Supernatural, and Once Upon A Time. She even writes fan fiction for OUAT. Actually, I’ve started to read some of her work and it is quite good! I think this book will help me understand her a little better.
Covers:
Favorite Cover:
This version comes in blue, yellow, pink, and I think red? Maybe? Personally, I am partial to the pink. I also like how the characters are bigger on the front of this version.
Least Favorite Covers:
I’m not a fan of the cover on the left AT ALL. It is just ugly. The cover on the right isn’t awful. I like the concept of the letters coming out of her computer screen, but there is too much empty space. The title and author name should have been enlarged to fill the space.
I totally agree with your choices. I love how the characters are a lot bigger than on the standard edition, it just gives it for of a better fell I don’t know 😊
I started reading this a while back and actually didn’t enjoy it, couldn’t even make it to the end. Don’t let me put you off though because it’s supposed to be a fantastic read I just think I didn’t give it enough of a chance. Definitely going to give it another go sometime soon.

Thanks for reading! You are actually the first person who I’ve encountered that didn’t love it! I am going into it without any expectations… I am reading it more to get a better understanding of my friend more than anything. Other than that, I’m not sure I would have selected this book for myself. Maybe it will surprise me 😊

I like your choices! I think it’s pretty cool you are trying to understand that part of your friend, it’s very sweet 🙂

Thank you! As we have gotten older and had families of our own, it’s been harder and harder to find time for our friendship. We agreed to try and make it more of a priority and both compromise and try each other’s “things.”

Aww that’s amazing, that’s a beautiful true friendship right there ❤

The original and the pink cover are my personal favourites. I love the graphic characters! They look so cute.

I think the graphic characters will end up fitting with the tone of the book. I feel there are a lot of covers that don’t “match” the story.

That annoys me a lot, especially when the character on the cover looks nothing like how they are described in the actual book.

Oh man, I *loved* Fangirl! Rainbow Rowell has such a gift for writing characters and relationships. I hadn’t seen all these different covers (I have the green one). The one with the real girl on her laptop is so cringy! I’m not sure I would have picked it up if I’d found that version in the bookshop. (I’m such a cover snob.)

Yay! I’m really excited to dive into it! I think the purple one may have worked better with a graphic character on front with her laptop vs. the real girl… She also looks a little emo-ish?

Haha, totally! Melanie over at Grab the Lapels was talking about how real people often don’t work on book covers a little while back. In her case, she was reviewing a YA novel called Hung Up, and the characters never see each other and are never described in the story but there’s still a really cheesy pic of them on the cover. https://grabthelapels.com/2016/05/02/hung-up/

Ahhh good points! I think real people on the cover CAN work, however only for specific genres… I think adult historical fiction and some contemporary (done correctly) are some of the few genres that can get away with it. It’s a pity when the cover is misleading and steers potential readers away that would otherwise enjoy the book!

I like the idea of an animated book cover for this book, so my least favorite is the one that has the human model (I think?). Is that the Russian cover?

I agree. I’m not sure which edition it is? I know we are supposed to include which country they are from, but I’m too lazy for all that 😅

This has been on my wishlist/TBR for so long! And I’ve never read a Rainbow Rowell book before too, so I think I’ll be starting with this one (as I think I can relate to the title, lol, I’ve had a few fandoms before as well).

Good luck! Hopefully it will be a home run for both of us 😁

Oh cool!! I’m so happy to see that you’re hyped about reading this book! It was my first Rainbow Rowell title. After, you’ll want to read Carry On for sure 😀 Eleanor & Park is also a good one… and if you want something short by her but interesting, there is Kindred Spirits!!

Ahem, *rolls out scroll* I love Fangirl so much!! I wasn’t quite sure what to expect from it because I put off reading it for so long but omg I finished it and was outraged that I didn’t have another Rowell book to read. I recently got Carry On and I fully expect that you’ll read that one too (because everyone loves Simon and Baz, I challenge you to come out of Fangirl and not like them (I feel like I’ve jinxed you now)). The book is just so funny and omg Levi – FETCH YOUR FAN, you will need to cool yourself down when you get all hot and bothered thinking about him too much. I shall await your decision
impatiently on the book.LikeLiked by 1 person
Ahhh!!! So Carry On is about the fictional series Cath is obsessed with?!? Is it Cath’s fan fiction writing about them?!

Yesss!! In Fangirl there’s a popular series called “Simon Snow” and she writes fanfic for it (Simon snow itself is effectively fanfic of Harry Potter) and Carry On is the fanfic Cath writes.
